Free-cycling
...
or go back
We’ve all heard it or read it somewhere: "Whatever you sow, you shall reap." It’s the Universal Law of giving and receiving—or what we might refer to as "what goes around comes around." I enjoy applying this law to networking whether for business or for fun.
Let’s say you are looking for a painter, and I refer you to someone I know and trust, then perhaps you will think of me when you hear someone say they need a writer. I’d much rather work with someone who gave you good service at a fair price than to just try my luck with someone in the Yellow Pages—even the REAL Yellow Pages! The same is true if you have something to give away, and you let me know about it. Chances are I may know someone who is needing that very item. That’s free recycling—or free-cycling!
Networking is about helping people with no strings attached. But what about giving business leads away? Won’t I go broke referring people to someone else? If you can provide a service at a price and in the time frame that fits the needs of person in front of you, DO IT! But, if you are unable to meet the business needs of a client, refer them to someone who can. Recently, I’ve been "booked" to my ears! I was working on four book projects at once and had several more set to begin within the next few months. I began referring people who were looking for a ghostwriter to another writer rather than putting the customer off until September. Now my writer friend is busy and I still have people on my waiting list with more leads coming in daily.
Remember there’s enough water in the ocean to float all our boats. When we share our resources, we all benefit.
